  1. Tower Shafts and bevel gears were standard for inline aircraft engines. Gears also drove the magnetos, oil pumps, foolant pumps and mechanical superchargers. Botton end bearings could be plain or roller type. Radials it was common to use ball bearings on the crank. The cam rings were driven by external and internal spur gears. The cam ring in an 18 cylinder radial often turned wt 25% of crank speed. Props in all engines except low powered direct drive engines used speed reduction drives to keep prop tip blade speeds below the speed of sound.

  3. I've seen a video off an OHC conversion of a OHV V-8 with a similiar system.

  4. Now that l think back on it they had a shaft with eccentrics on it mounted above the valves with miniature connecting rods

  5. One proble i can see with this system is variable valve timing could be an issue.
