I've driven Canberra to Melbourne and return three times in the last 12 months in my ICE Subaru Outback. On 4 out of the 6 trips I've stopped for marooned EV drivers on the side of the road, who have either lost their battle with range anxiety or shredded a tyre and the useless puncture repair kit wasn't up to it (no room for a emergency wheel, let alone a real spare).

Its not just the US. In the UK the MOD / DSTL are looking at EV Jackals and here in the ADF we are looking at EV Bushmasters.

@mikehunt-w8u Well I'm not the sort of person to leave a Mum and kids by the side of the road.

@eyerollthereforeiam1709 Yes, recently someone "harvested" most of the cables along the Hume highway from just South of Sydney to just North of Melbourne.

If it can't see a Kangaroo, I'm sure wont see a Wombat (basically a moving concrete bollard).

@OM617a They tend not to have spares because the room is used by the battery.
4
@gerbre1 That's great for Germany or the US. It doesn't really help in the 700km drive between Canberra and Melbourne.
4
Who has the Public Liability for the trip hazard on the footpath?
4
Well the company is spending money to pay the CEO for the use of the jet the CEO already owns. Sounds like a thinly disguised "bonus" for the CEO to me.
2
@gerbre1 Sure except motor vehicles are what about 7% of our CO2 emissions. Could make bigger / better savings elsewhere.
2
@simoncrooke1644 Yes sorry used the old muscle memory Sydney to Melbourne number. I'll correct the earlier post.
2
Re the Nullabor I hope no one has "harvested" the cables from the chargers. In any case pack a tow cable in the ICE car.
2
They can't be that "eco friendly" when the foxes die after being exposed to the brake fluid.
2
Sorry. I initially watched for the EV issues. Now that you are slamming Solar, Wind, I'll stop.

Perhaps the Council could invest in additional bike paths, for the commute to/from the city?
1
Probably no surprise that a funded Marketing Dept + Virtue Signalling = A race to be "firstest with the bestest".
1
@erik_dk842 Perhaps, but not $1,700,000 per year. Even commercial first class flights would be cheaper.
1
@gerbre1 Assuming - 1. There are vacancies at the charging spots. 2. The chargers aren't broken/damaged. 3. the chargers are of the correct type.
1
@gerbre1 Sure - 2021/22 Australian sources of CO2 missions: 46% power generation, 30% mining, 15% Manufacturing, ....

Oxygen cylinders will do that and when ruptured contribute to the ferocity of the fire.
1
I presume you are tracking the recent failed trial in Canberra? It would seem self evident that using the heating consumes energy from the same battery as is used to propel the vehicle.
1
Ah Sydney to Melbourne via the "city" route and doing 60kph in a 110kph zone.
1
Where does the news article suggest its an EV fire?
1
Perhaps the ambulances can recharge while "ramping"? The Canadian fire trucks will be great during winter given cold weather battery life.
1
I suspect most EV fans have never been in a Physics or Chemistry school lab.

ANCAP one week, EVs the next - I guess Damien updated his CV recently?

We are in Canberra and have roof top solar, a battery and 3 phase power. Currently considering buying a 2nd hand banger (albeit only 3 years old or so) for the commute in Canberra and retaining the ICE vehicle for the real driving - Canberra to Sydney, Canberra to Melbourne, etc.

38C forecast for Melbourne today (22 Feb).
1
Then of course you have depreciation issues, battery life in cold weather, panel beating expenses (due to bespoke panels/materials), no spare tyre, ....
1
Don't forget "too fast". Trying to do 110kph on a freeway reduces the "range" massively. Do we need to go back to having a person with a red flag walking in front of the vehicle?

A true "moped" supplements the pedaling (hence Motor and Pedal in the name). A different beast to the pedestrian and rider unfriendly eScooter.
