Where do Defensive Operations end? Do we include the recapture of Crimea (or anything else lost in 2014) a Defensive Operation? What sort of criteria we are applying in terms of interdicting Russian aggression vs deep strike and other actions designed to set the conditions for effectively attacking Russia (as opposed to regaining lost territory)? I thought we were trying to contain this?

@kiwifruitpoo I get that's the theory. If say 1x HIMARS (just to pick one system) "goes astray" we stop giving more. What is to stop the stocks already "in country" to be used offensively? Or Western supplied Ukrainian MBTs move into territory lost in 2014? Ukraine will call that a "Defensive Operation" to regain lost territory, the Russians may well claim its "aggression", since in their eyes it is "territory of the Russian Federation".

@UncappingBadger I understand you point. But regardless of what Ukraine or NATO thinks, if the Russian Federation regards Crimea and the ground gained in 2014 as Russian Territory, then Ukrainian attempts to re-capture that are likely to be seen by the Russian Federation as an Offensive Operation against the Russian Federation and we are back on the escalation glide path. I'm not a apologist for the Russian Federation, but as someone in uniform who may well get involved in such a mess it would be nice if there was clarity. If NATO intends to support Ukraine up to and including the pre 2014 border, great but all I'm hearing is words along the lines of support during the "current conflict" (i.e. post FEB 2022).
