"Autonomous" is great until it engages the wrong target. You need to retain a human in the loop, otherwise the whole legal framework goes out the window.

@graveperil2169 Right and when the missile decides "by itself" to engage the ambulance rather than the troop truck, who goes up to the International Criminal Court on the War Crime charge? I suspect "Oops" wont cut it.

@graveperil2169 In a declared war sure, however once you introduce these things and they comprise say 70%+ of your combat power you then need to use them in situations less than declared war - say peace keeping, peace enforcement, etc. Then "Oops" doesn't cut it. e.g. 1. Australians who went to court because they took fire from a room. They returned fire and threw a grenade. Unknown to them there were civilians in the room. e.g. 2: PTE Lee Clegg, who was manning a VCP. 1st, 2nd and 3rd rounds were legal because the car was coming at him. 4th round resulted in the death of an occupant so he was charged with and convicted of murder.

 @graveperil2169 Right so when your "autonomous" platform (UGV, UAS, etc.) fires shot 4 and has satisfied the burden of proof for a murder charge - where do we go from there?
