I think a lot of this is timeframe based. During the Second World War, weapons with relatively lower muzzle velocities and "rudimentary" ammunition, angling may well result in incoming rounds ricocheting, not penetrating, or shattering. Now with say 120mm L55 and firing say DM63A1 APFSDS-T (L55) or M829A3 APFSDS-T the APFSDS penetrator dart is less likely to be influenced by angling as the penetration overmatch is marked, although they can still shatter.
