a friend of mine, made redundant from a company, got a job with a shire. He had the same experience - he got told off for completing tasks to quickly and too well. But this isn't confined to government. Another friend decided to work for a year in England, and got a job with Marconi, a defence contractor. He too was criticized for being too productive.

@masons9541 That's exactly what my friend found. except it wasn't so much apathy in management - the workers had long trained the management to not expect full production.

The US lost the Vietnam War in large part because it put a moron in charge - General Westmoreland. The interesting thing is that he was known to be a moron before they put him in charge. So, why did they do it?

Nixon said that Iranians who went to the USA for their education returned to Iran and joined the revolution. But Iranian friends I have, who did go to American universities, have told me that, after the revolution, they could not go home. The mullas considered them corrupted by the USA and could not therefore be allowed to mingle with society in Iran - they would be jailed. Especially the women, who wore miniskirts in the USA and got invited to parties. The Shah was not a legitimate leader. He was backed in forcing an end to democratic government in order to assure continuity of oil supply to Britain. Hence he wasn't much liked and had to be ruthless to stay in power.

Didn't the rift between China and the USSR start on the USSR side - because Mao wouldn't follow orders? Stalin decided to support Mao when Cash-My-Cheque was the Chinese leader, because he saw Mao as the strongest and most likely to succeed (he was right there) but Mao got too big and made his own decisions. A not insignificant fact was that when Stalin invited Mao to Moscow, Mao, although very intelligent, turned out to be very poor on personal hygiene and wasn't toilet trained. Relations were never the same after that.
