It's not as simple as that. It started out as a case of a new neurosurgeon, with special training and experience in USA, able to do operations not until then possible in Australia, and he saved lives - which was indeed embarrassing for older neurosurgeons. He also said in public that certain surgeons had made specific patient outcomes worse by not giving him immediate referrals, which is a big ethical no-no. Its ok to criticize in professional forums, but not on national TV. But over the years Teo lost the plot and started doing operations where even he was unlikely to get a good outcome. In doing that he crossed another line ethically and that gave an opportunity for the other neurosurgeons to object. To keep the peace hospitals would not allow him to operate in their facilities. Then Teo got private investor backing to have his own hospital, which would mean they've lost control over him. So he was then restricted to only operating if permitted in writing by another neurosurgeon - of course none would, and no doctor would write a referral, so any surgery he does is not covered by Medicare and not by private insurance either. Also, neurosurgery requires very good deft of touch and precise work. At 65 he's getting too old to do the work anyway.
