  1.  @CrRodney1  : Australia's population is about 26 million. That's pretty small for an advanced western culture country. China's population is 54 times Australia's. The USA's population is 13 times as big. Their GDP is 16 times as big. The USN spends on just one of its carrier task forces what the RAN spends in its entirety. That's why Australia has no aircraft carrier - we simply can't afford one - we are too small. We can't afford nuclear subs either. The RAN did once have an aircraft carrier - the war surplus and near useless Melbourne sold to us at a war surplus price. It spent 90% of its time in port as there was no money to do better. Australia has a service-based economy, propped up by selling dirt to China. We have no significant manufacturing industry to make available skilled workers and components at a reasonable price.

  2. Wrong. The Lucas Heights facility is NOT a power station. It is for producing isotopes for research and mainly for medical diagnostic uses, analysis of sample materials, and production of special high purity alloys. The isotopes are produced by irradiation and chemical isolation. Its' heat output is miniscule compared to power stations.

Well, the fact is, Australia could not afford nuclear subs and never wanted them. Population wise, we are a small country, with a correspondingly small tax base to spend on military items. Our population has grown, but we still can't afford nuclear subs - they are just a Dutton thought bubble and won't actually happen. As far as ties are concerned, we are much closer to the USA than to Britain - have been since Britain dudded us in World War 2 and our prime minister had to go cap in hand and ask the USA for help in preventing Japanese invasion. We have defence treaties and arrangements with the USA. The British queen and now king has no relevance whatsoever to what equipment we buy.
