A couple of minor corrections:- Asianomentry said that the engineers thought the salesmen were stupid. That's common to all engineering companies. Certainly it was common in all the companies I worked for. At 14:50 Asianometry said that Tandberg invented the reel-to-reel tape recorder. Certainly not - reel-to-reel recorders were in wide us in the German radio industry during World War 2, long before Tandberg got around to making them. I remember Tandberg's tape recorder advertising - seriously overpriced, nicely built, but having performance no better than Japanese machines.

When governments meddle with an industry, 10:1 it's only going to make things worse. If not it just prolongs the agony. Consider Britain - their government meddling in their aircraft industry pretty much killed it. Same with their car making. In Australia, government meddling in the car making industry killed that.

@paul_boddie : You have it pretty right in all that. Except one should ask what would have happened in the government had not forced the aircraft manufacturers to merge. The weaker ones would have gone broke, but the strongest one or 2 would have got all the domestic market, from that had the strength to compete internationally, and around the world we might by flying in Boeing, and British instead of Being and Airbus. Don't forget that Government meddling led to stupid things like the Bristol Brabazon - a monster luxury piston engine airliner for which there was no market, because the government committee thought that air travel was only for rich big businessmen, but actually air travel largely about tourists and people visiting their families.
