At one time the company I worked for made me responsible for keeping a number of solaris boxes going. It was a nightmare. With any Microsoft OS, if a box crashes, do a cold start and 99.9% of the time it will come up just fine and work normally. Not with Solaris. I quickly learnt that shutting down and rebooting was the worst thing to do. Endless problems with slow response due to zombie processes. Install a supposedly minor patch, and hey presto - the system won't boot anymore. And you have to do a disk re-partition. Windows up to 3.11 was not very stable. But when NT arrived - it was fabulous - dead easy to use and very stable. PC users complained of the "blue screen of death" but NT on a PC was heaven compared to the stability typically offered on minis and mainframes. Asianometry mentioned Daisy. That same company I worked for had a division that designed electronic products. They bought some Daisy systems for EDA - printed circuit design. It cost them $250,000 per workstation. It was no better to use, did nothing much more, and performed no better, than a similar application sold by local company Protel (now Altium) for about $500 - and it ran on an ordinary PC compatible costing $1,000.
