Hector Hernandez : Well, duh... obviously! It says so in the above text and in the beginning of the video. My point was that the colourisation operator did not choose the colours intelligently. No computer can know what colours cars came in. It is up to the operator to find out. He didn't bother. As I recall, greens and maroons were popular back then. Reds and maroons render dark in black and white film, especially reds, if orthochromatic film was used. Vivid blues come out almost white on ortho film, however few cars then were blue. Panchromatic film, which gives a balanced black and white image almost identical to a colour TV or computer image with the colour turned right down, wasn't common until after the War. This is another thing an operator must understand and correct for, if he wants to do a good job.

@Proper : Yes. To get colourisation right, the operator needs to understand that the grey scale in ortho film is not correct, as ortho is blue sensitive and ignores red. With pan film, not widely used until after the war, the grey scale is such that all you need to do is add a likely tint to each object until it and its shadow looks natural. With ortho film that method won't work. Of course, even with pan film, you or the AI need to know or intelligently guess what tint to add. With trees it's obviously green, but with cars it isn't. The sound in this series of old films is pretty sloppy too. In this film of Burbank it isn't too bad, it just sounds like the view point is the back of a low geared truck. But in other films it is laughable - just a sloppy careless mix of sounds from a standard sound effects CD - the films would be better without it.

Why are nearly all cars purple? I don't think that would have been the case. If you were to compare a typical suburban street in Australia of the same time period, you would see that Australia was very poor, third world, in comparison. Nice street in Burbank, lots of trees, various house styles that look nice, lots of garages for cars. When I was a child in Australia (1950's), our house had no electricity, as was the case with most in the street. Only one house in our area had a phone - when someone took sick, a kid was sent to run to the house with a phone to ask them to ring for a doctor or ambulance (which took 30 minutes to come). Gravel roads everywhere, only 30 km from a capital city. Now, Australia has caught up, we have everything, and our road surfaces (bitumen) are much better maintained than the roads in this video. America has not improved.

I should have pointed out that the washed out smoky appearance of the sky indicates that ortho film was used. Of course, it could have been an overcast day.
