  1. Contrary to what Mockler said, Ukraine wanted to be part of Europe because they saw it as an economic benefit. This triggered Russian aggression and that in turn led Ukraine to desire NATO membership, in order to protect themselves. Meanwhile Russia wants at least the eastern part of Ukraine because of its technology capability and because of its mineral resources - and now Trump wants it. Russia also wants it as a buffer state. Mockler has not understood a long held doctrine of both USSR/Russia and the USA (and China) ever since WW2: You never want to find a war on your own territory, Therefore you should create political and military situation where if any dispute escalates into war, you fight it on someone elses' territory. Buffer states fulfill this requirement. That's why the US has supported NATO and why Russia wants satellite states surrounding itself. Trump understands this doctrine too, sort of. But he wants to pull it back to Canada and Greenland. None of this is morally right of course. A country, such as Ukraine, should be free to make its own choices. But if you want to solve a dispute, you first need to understand why there is a dispute.
