  2. Actually, at least in the large company I worked for, it wasn't. They provided word processors to the typing pool and the rest of the company remained unchanged. What caused a huge reduction in staff a few years later was the introduction of email, which let them get rid of the typing pool completely, along with a lot of secretaries/personal assistants. Then the creation of the company intranet and automating a lot of things on the intranet let them reduce staff count considerably.
