They said Stalin had no inkling of the pending German attack. Oh yes, he did. His espionage operations told him. Churchill told him. One needs to understand just how ruthless Stalin was. He had the Soviet military command purged at just the right moment to ensure they would fight effectively and follow his directives, and ensure trustworthy senior officers were in command. Mearsheimer claimed Hitler was confident. Actually, he wasn't - he knew attacking the USSR was a huge gamble. But he was very much a gambling man and he knew the war was lost if he didn't attack the USSR, because Germany didn't have near enough oil to keep fighting - he needed the Soviet oil fields, which were out of range of B-17''s and B-25's. Mearsheimer thinks Germany had a chance of winning against the USSR. They had no chance. They had no chance because their logistics was not up to it. They had no chance because the Soviets could muster much greater resources in men and material. Hitler committed 3 million men - all he could muster. The USSR deployed more than twice that number. Hitler and his planners assumed they could capture the Soviet rail transport system intact. They did not realise the Stalin was ruthless enough to have it all wrecked as Germen troops advanced.
