Forgotten History has focused on the more titillating aspects of Hoover - e.g., his sexual deviations - which in the grand scheme of things doesn't actually matter much, distateful though they may be. But FH has not even mentioned Hoover's major failing - while he was paranoid about Soviet spies, he & the FBI never looked in the right place. The spies were hiding in plain sight. Stalin set up a special programme in which thousands of Russia's best and brightest young scientists and engineers were sent to the USA and openly enrolled at important American universities. As is normal for advanced university students, they then got internships and jobs in aerospace and military contractors. They then either sent back all they could learn, or returned to the USSR to apply what they had learnt - and I am not talking about what they learnt in university classrooms. If Hoover looked in the right place, the USSR would not have developed advanced technology and the Cold War would not have happened. That's way way more significant than JEH holding some lackey's hand. The USA never learns from its mistakes. They are letting China do the same thing.
