Actually, membership of the Komsomol was voluntary. She lied in saying membership was automatic. In fact, the Komsomol often had difficulty recruiting enough young women to meet its goals. Most citizens were never members. To join, she had to a) volunteer, and b) get her parent's ok. That may be why Sen Kennedy kept asking her if she had sent a letter of resignation. He probably looked it up, just as I did - or got one of his staff to look it up. Of course, if you were a young lady growing up in the Soviet Union, it was probably a wise career move to play the game and join. But why lie about it? Incidentally, membership of Komsomol was available between ages 14 to 28. It was not school child thing.
