All that talk about fire-proofing and not allowing wood - but they built it of aluminium - the one structural metal that burns really good and hot! Building it for the trans-Atlantic run at the beginning of the jumbo airliner era was much like building steam locomotives at the beginning of the diesel electric era. Somebody had more money than brains.

@c.c.hiliner1065 It seems you are the one who does not understand. Go look us what happened to USS Belknap. It collided with an Aircraft carrier with negilble damage to the steel hull. However a fire broke out and the Belknap's aluminium superstructure and interior, being built of aluminium, melted and collapsed, caught fire too, resulting in the USN banning aluminium. You should look up the thermite reaction, where burning aluminium in the presence of rusted iron causes heat hot enough to reach 2,500 C. It is well known that jumbo airliners made air travel so cheap the ship travel could not compete and disappeared.
