It doesn't matter whether you burn a fossil fuel in your self in your car, or it has to be burnt in a power station to supply you with electricity for charging a vehicle, the result is the same. Sure electric motors are very efficient, but you still have the conversion of fossil fuel into electricity and that is not an efficient process, regardless of whether you do it or the power company does it.
