  1. It sounds like a typical murder detective to me. When someone gets shot or killed at home, they take the view that it was their partner that did it, and fit the partner up. It's simpler that way, and they can list the conviction on their CV. Saves much "unnecessary" work trying to ferret out from forensic clues what actually happened. The last thing a detective wants to be is open minded - that needs more brains, more leg work, and doesn't get the case load done. Police training teaches that almost all at-home murders are crimes of passion by the partner, which through confirmation bias is self-proving. A chap that lives in my street came home to find his wife cold and dead. The cops decided that he did it by whacking her on the head with a heavy blunt object, although no such object was found. They arrested him and proceeded to fit him up. But the judge threw the case out due to several anomalies, including that the post mortem showed no evidence of blunt trauma, and that she had been a walking heart attack waiting to happen.

  2. Be sure that it is out of a can or sealed wrapper that you open - so there is no possibility of the cops spiking it with ethanol to dull your wits, or caffeine to make your mind race.
