  1. Growing up in Australia in the 1950's, I can confirm that some young teenagers did consider getting employment as a garbage collector. Garbage collectors then were all shire employees with total job security, got to stand on the truck running boards while the truck was in motion (very cool), and yell out cheeky words to any ladies as they went past. And garbage collectors lived well, because they retained anything good thrown out for their personal use. A school friend of mine took home a perfectly good expensive stereo that some rich twerp threw out. But by our late teens, most of us wanted to get tradesman jobs in the railways. A big railway workshop was nearby and employed a lot of the town population. Being government owned, there was a lot of "foreign" (illicit) work done.
