@vk2ig : Also the metal skin of the aircraft blocks the signal, only a weal portion of it gets through the windows. That's why you can get a good signal on the ground where you intercept the horizontally directed cell tower beam, but at cruising altitude it would be more difficult. You may, however, get some signal (if you were allowed to).
