This sounds like a classic case, where too much automation - intended to reduce pilot workload - when it goes outside its limits, actually makes the pilot workload higher, beyond what he can do. I bet if those two galas, if they were flying an old fashioned plane with no automation, they would have landed safely, captain drunk or not. They would have done it on practiced instinct. This is a very important point, because we are constantly being told self-driving cars are possible and will be common within a few years. But the driver must maintain situation awareness and be ready to take over instantly. That is just not going to work.
