@SingerKeyaa I am aware of Varanasi and its ghats and that the remains are put in the Ganges river. In the UK where I am, people are buried whole or cremated. When people are cremated, a very hot gas oven is used to do the job. These have a little inspection window around the back, really for the staff to check the progression of burning, but when there are Hindus or others that have a desire to watch their loved one reduced to an elemental state, then they are able to view the process.
The heat in these gas ovens is great enough to only leave behind the long bones and they are crushed and returned with the other ashes to the relatives. There is much more of the person left when they are burnt on a pyre because it is difficult to reach the higher temperature where the bones become very friable. Whether the belly button is left, I guess would depend on 2 intertwined factors. 1] the heat of the fire and 2] the amount of fat on the person, fat burns very nicely and would add to the burning. People who have died very suddenly, may have a fair degree of fat, but often you find that very elderly people carry very little weight and people that expire from cancer or tuberculosis can be very thin indeed. In medieval times in Europe, witches and heretics were burnt at the stake and I have heard of examples of body parts, specifically the heart not burning.
