My son has autism, a friend invited me to an alternative health fair for carers. This was the first time that I heard the term indigo child and I thought that some of the things that they espoused had the potential to be damaging. I see my child as having a brain that is simply wired differently. He has a problem seeing the bigger picture, which can have some very definite disadvantages and is very good at seeing details, which in some situations and jobs can be advantageous. He is brilliant with computers and I absolutely support him in that, but just because he has some sort of gift does not mean that I think that this exempts him or me from working on some of the weaknesses in his life, which seems to be what some of these alternative therapists advocate. We are all unique and special in our own particular ways and to say that someone is indigo and for that reason alone is somehow superior to others is setting that person up for narcissism.
