@tammyhuennerkopf9065 Drugs are tested chemically and if they pass, they go on to be tested in human cell cultures, but that is not the same thing as a whole-body system. They are then tested in animals to try and get an indication of toxicity, side effects and effective dose range, this is to try and make it as safe as possible before it goes into humans. To be fair the test company was negligent, they failed to follow existing protocols for the administration of monoclonal antibodies, which would have negated many of the problems that arose with this trial. The reality is: how many times do you hear of a trial going wrong? Almost never, because usually, we have a good idea as to the drugs safety and likely effects due to prior experimentation in animals.

Not unusual to find that drug researchers do exactly that. This drug was passed from the manufacturer to a contract company that tests drugs. At this time there were established protocols for testing monoclonal antibodies. The usual way to administer this class of drugs is to dilute it into a drip of phosphate buffered saline and to infuse slowly over a period of around an hour. If the patient shows an adverse reaction the infusion can be paused so that the dose that they receive is less. Cytokine storms are a known side effect of this class of drugs and for that reason, the researchers should have had an anti-inflammatory steroid called Prednisolone on standby and resus facilities on hand.
