MEL CHAR well I'm English And I actually believe that the Scottish have every right to decide for themselves how they want to be governed. I would only ask them to be great friends of the UK and make a strong bond between us. But the Scottish may even choose to remain if there's another referendum. I would respect their decision either way because I see no advantage in compelling people to be in a situation they don't want.

Pboy 98 So let me get this straight. People need to get physically attacked if they put a mark on a piece of paper? Or if they SPEAK THEIR MINDS? . Hmm.m Why won't Spain permit a legitimate referendum? What are they worried about?

Jim Ivey I have to confess, that is an odd dichotomy. It's probably why the declaration was suspended ....

vinm300 but to dissolve a duly elected Parliament IS undemocratic.
1
vinm300 okay. Well why can't Madrid find a middle ground and offer a meaningful referendum and argue a case? ..... Then neither situation will occur. And will Catalonia appreciate having its autonomy stripped? Here in UK, Northern Ireland has no regional administration. Does UK Parliament want to take over? ABSOLUTELY NOT! We want NI to get its act together are start governing itself. The LAST thing we want is to impose a government there!!! Sheesh. Can't Madrid find a way that gives the Catalonians what they want and maintains peace? Surely there is a better way forward?
1
vinm300 okay Talks. That's a great start. Dialogue and an attempt (edit: Serious) to understand each others perspective. I really believe that there is a way forward for this situation. ...

Grand1Admiral well I hope not. I hope there can be a peaceful resolution. Imo the Spanish govt should allow a legitimate referendum and let the cards fall where they may. They could argue a string case for remaining and allow Catalonia to express its mindset. It's a risk. But why compel people? If they argue a good case for remaining and give Catalonia more autonomy and let them have their sense of identity while offering strong partnership, they could gain a real unity......
1
J Aranda nice one. Yeah string all of the Catalonians up by their balls / tits, right? End of problem.
1
J Aranda Ok Well 90% of them voted for independence. In an atmosphere of threat. Only 10% came out to vote negative. If Madrid was prepared to go along with a peaceful plebescite with no threat of political policing, what do you think the result might be? Is Madrid AFRAID of a free and fair referendum, conducted in peace? So why don't they permit the Catalonians to have a legitimate referendum? What are afraid of? ......... Over to you.
1
J Aranda that 42% ... Should they be strung up by their tits?
1
Jim Ivey are you a Scot? I'd like to see exactly that. (What you are suggesting) But I don't see why the Scottish people should not decide for themselves. If Scotland ran a referendum, would the UK send in uniformed police to prevent it? I doubt that a lot.
1
Jim Ivey yes well I think your point is valid. We're in agreement.
1
James Watson well that's probably true Why doesn't Spain allow Catalonia to speak its mind in a free, fair and peaceful referendum?
1
Big mac it's wrong for people to go to a booth and put a mark on a piece of paper? Hell. Don't apply for anything or sign anything ....

Invalid Username thanks for that link That use of a police force is disgraceful. The came WITH riot shields and arms. This is happening inside the EU? Disgraceful. And the Spanish government could simply have ignored the ballot and said it's not valid. WHY doesn't Spain allow the Catalans to have a peaceful referendum ? The UK offered the Scots an independence referendum and allowed it to proceed. If the police were involved it was only as PEACEKEEPERS. This is very infuriating....
1
Big mac explain what you mean? The Scottish have every right to choose how they want to be governed in the UK. They had a referendum and voted to remain in the UK. Why can't the Catalans make their own choice? What's the problem? Are you worried they might choose to secede in a plebescite? Suppose they do? Why would Spain want to compel them to remain and frustrate them? It will turn into resentment. ... The EU apparently are now backing Madrid. So they've now taken sides in this situation.... I think the EU are heading for some very choppy waters.
1
Big mac they have their own language and culture ...
1
Pboy 98 ok. So why does Spain not allow a free referendum answer it? The action they are taking will only make people angry ...
1
Pboy 98 Ok So what you need to SETTLE this issue is a free and fair referendum run with agreed conditions. The independence people will believe they have no voice. The only poll that counts is a real one.
1
Obviously is the rest of Spain voted Catalonia would have no chance at independence. Only Scottish residents has right to vote for Scottish independence. You're trying to stack the deck. If the UK had allowed the rest of the EU to vote on brexit there wouldn't be a chance in hell of the UK leaving. ...
1
Pboy 98 but Spain was not allowing a well run referendum. Just armed and violent surpression of people who want to make their view known. It's only going to make the resentment worse. The UK had decades of IRA for similar response ....
