  2. Good luck in discovering Europe, may you have only positive experiences. Former Eastern Bloc countries are generally much cheaper and perhaps even culturally closer to you. Especially Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia. But don't speak Russian. People here are generally already very allergic to Ukrainian and Russian. We have almost half a million refugees here in a country of ten million and it is causing major social and economic problems.

  3. One soon forgets what humiliating procedures it is to beg and apply for visas. We experienced this before 1989 when someone happened to be planning a trip west. Lots of permits, employer approval, Communist Party approval, buy a few Deutsche Marks. It was a terrible time. Never again. Now we travel completely freely in e Europe and basically everywhere else. Unfortunately, people often forget what was before.
