And here was me thinking that J K Rowling and Harry Potter had "got kids reading",.. And had got them absorbed in stories. 😏 I expect that "teaching to the test" HAS had something to do with it.. But I thought that that "standardised testing" was only for the poors? Not for your Harvard types. 😏 As for "phonics", I believe that my mother taught me to read that way, using a Disney alphabet mural, by accident! But REALLY, kids need to learn to TEACH THEMSELVES, after they have learnt the basics of how to read. I remember I was reading Charles Dickens and Huckleberry Finn out of my dad's library, when I was only a couple of years into primary school! Someone needs to boot those kids up the ass, instead of spoonfeeding them all the time! 😏

They take much longer (for me, a fast reader) but you can do other stuff while listening.

@Mountainshark I find audiobooks are better for nonfiction. (Though I sometimes love to hear how narrators read fiction, and the accents they do for the characters, eg with Stephen King.) I got Karl Popper's The Open Society and Its Enemies as an audiobook recently, and got right the way through it!🙂 It helps being a member of Audible, where you get a credit for one book a month. 👍
