I never HAVE yet seen burgundy-coloured sea: BUT the deep shades of Cornish seas near the shore, during the summer and at other times of year, ranging from a dark blue to a dark green, surprises me not at all, that someone would come up with the adjective "wine-dark". I assume that these dark colours of sea are also prevalent in the Med: since it is not so far as I know full of white coral sands beaches!

  6. Well: we still occasionally speak of "a swarthy man", meaning in my estimation a man with a lot of dark hair and beard! (I don't think it means person of colour...)
