Actually, my late mother (sie war Volksdeutsche) defected, not from East German citizenship, but from Polish citizenship (she was in East Berlin on a university trip) through Berlin years before the wall was built, in the early 1950s. The students were supposed to "control" each other by only going out in pairs. My mother managed to persuade her "friend" that she wouldn't get into trouble for my mother's leaving, if they went into a large East Berlin department store and split up, then leaving from different entrances, my mother's friend was then to say that she lost her in the store. This is exactly what happened. My mother then went to a poorly manned checkpoint that was just really a gap in the barbed wire and got across.
Don't think that the West Germans made it sweet for her, in the first few months after she defected, though! π For months she had to go to live in a refugee camp for displaced persons. She didn't even have enough clothes to wear, only what she stood up in. She was surrounded by prostitutes, whose ranks she did not wish to join. Only one day, these women took her out to a casino, and "donated" her 1 Deutschmark to gamble. She put it on the roulette wheel: won 7 marks. Put it on again: won 21 marks. She did not push her luck but took it to the German Woolworths to buy a new set of clothes! Nobody was donating her any.
She was interrogated multiply, mostly by Americans speaking bad Polish, because they suspected her of being a spy or plant. π She told me they fingerprinted her entire hands, palms and all! π Then they started to try to bribe her, with free passage to Canada and a university scholarship there, if she would do things like denounce all the professors at her university that she thought were the most fervent Communists, and go on Radio Free Europe to denounce the regime. She refused because she still had close family there, parents and siblings. The CIA or whoever it was didn't care. π They even followed her and shadowed her around Berlin. She had to beg them to stop, because as she said, she didn't know if it was them on each occasion, or the Stasi (who might try to kidnap her) and it was literally driving her crazy. Finally they left her alone, and she eventually obtained West German citizenship and went to study at a West Berlin university. She had a VERY bad impression of the United States of America ever since! She thought you guys were worse than the Communists. π
(Incidentally: when the US started this "three strikes and you're out" lark, in the 1990s: a fine example of its judicial oppression of poor people and minorities, my mother turned to me after a certain BBC news story highlighting the result of the policy, and she told me: "See?? In the USA they put you in prison for life for stealing a pizza!"
And they do, don't they, in certain cases? π Never heard of that happening in the DDR...)

Much of this is nonsense anyway. I've heard true crime accounts of a criminal putting someone "out " with s rag soaked in dry cleaning fluid! No-one's saying it's safe! π
And, aw, jeez!! π DON'T YOU KNOW HOW MANY KIDNAPPERS/RAPISTS DO, INDEED, COMMIT THEIR CRIMES BY "SLIPPING A MICKEY" INTO SOMEONE'S DRINK??? π
The major reason why you should never leave your drink unguarded!
It doesn't have to be chloral hydrate; and it doesn't have to knock the person out completely, to be effective!! Rendering them apparently "paralytic drunk' is enough. Then they can be "walked" out of the bar into a waiting car... π
So I suppose the author of this channel has never heard of the "date rape drug" ROHYPNOL ?? π
A side effect of such oral anaesthetic drugs is that they have an effect on people's short-to-medium-term memory , rendering them partially amnesic after they come to, much like going on a big bender with alcohol!
THAT is why criminals use stuff like the above, and it is a major danger! π‘
There is even an obscure but now notorious plant-based drug, brugmansia I think it is, that is used in certain South American countries to produce the effects I have detailed above and worse, and is used to rob tourists!
This site knows nothing.

But wait a minute: I think it's easier than most of the people here are making out, with their crap about Vulcan mind-melds and stuff. Only it doesn't work on everyone. And it's more likely to make them fall to their knees, than fall unconscious. You see, my mother and I were on a women's self-defence course once, among with a lot of other women. The instructor was a genuine Japanese-trained martial artist. He said all kinds of interesting things, most of which I can no longer remember, as it was many years ago.
One thing I do remember was something called.. I think it may have been "the eagle strike", but I am not sure after all this time. Anyway. It involved a raptor-like (think talons) grasping blow to the tops of the shoulders. He sad when done with force, this could indeed knock someone out (maybe your famous vagus nerve is involved here?) But is not without its dangers. (If you jump on someone like a raptor and make a "talon strike" on their shoulders. π)
The instructor said that when done carefully, it would make a person collapse to their knees. He proceeded to demonstrate on the women of the class..Most of them did, indeed, fall down. The major exceptions were my mother and I! πHe said it might be because we had differently-structured shoulders to the majority! π (My mother in particular was pint-sized and stocky. Neither of us had big builds.)
TBF, "suggestion" might also have been involved, and we were strong-willed! Naturally, he didn't want to do the full "eagle strike" on us. But the idea has, as you can see, stuck in my mind for years... (The full one involves a lot of force, not just a "neck pinch", from what he demonstrated - without a subject.)
