  5. Yeah. But the trouble is, in the countries that have "had that conversation", eg the USA, the people are no better off, in fact they are worse off in my example . We would be better off just with a written Constitution. The US would be better off with a National Health Service. The only other way to manage would be with something like a German-style "President". And that is frankly dull; and I can't see how the Germans are better off, just because of that . We'd be better with something else they've got: namely (+ more manufacturing & higher wages) workers' representation on company boards! And Holland still has a monarchy, and they're one of the most liberal countries in the world! So. I'm a socialist, but I still can't see why people fall for the illusion that "a republic will solve all our problems". If there was some historical reason to have one, such as Germany undoubtedly had, I'd say yes. But since there isn't... And since our royal family aren't (with the possible exception of Andrew) bad people..
