I thought you'd go more in depth into this, Professor Tim! Including into the history of the golliwog doll, in literature etc. And I think you misrepresented Frances Upton! By failing to say that her books about the golliwog and the other dolls were very successful, for years! She made quite an industry out of it. And then you're right: it was taken over in the 1950s by writers such as Enid Blyton. But you also FAILED to note the difference between those and the original golliwog books. Upton's Golliwog was "ugly" but brave and chivalrous. It was Enid Blyton who turned them into thieves and villains!

Not really. It's just a case of "politically correct" companies bearing down upon a small business, because they've decided that any negative publicity isn't worth it. (Though NOBODY was giving publicity to whichever lagers were on offer. 😏) Big companies have a track record of doing this to individuals as well; often for all sorts of not very laudable (but PR ass-covering) reasons. You really need to read a book by Jon Ronson entitled So You've Been Publicly Shamed. Oh: and expect a lot of "white backlash" in that area; including increased voting for whatever is the current incarnation of the Farage party; and whichever one it was the landlords belonged to. (& they might just sue the police, as well.)

@gramule But nevertheless: I don't think they were invented for harm.. & how many working class black people seriously worry about golliwogs, I wonder?
