  1. I don't think that Shakespeare was a racist. (After all, as you point out, Professor: he wrote Othello, with the Moor as hero; and n The Merchant Of Venice, my favourite play at school, old Will gives Shylock the Jew as fair a crack of the whip as he dared...) But then I never believed that Shakespeare was a woman, was really Francis Bacon or any of these other silly theories either.

  2. No. But he actually got the idea from an earlier and much more racist melodrama, The Jew Of Malta; and also an untranslated Italian folk story, according to the RSC's own website.
