Comments by "oneoflokis" (@oneoflokis) on "Minimum wage set to rise to £12.21 an hour for over 21's | Budget 2024" video.
@yourma2000 Bull. Employers never "bid", even in a "tight economy": that was proved in the US in the 2000s. Not having a proper minimum wage just leads to exploitation. It's far too low in the US now!

@Supposedlyimrightwingnow Maybe we should have price controls, then?

@triggercky9928 Don't know about that.. Personally I noticed how the minimum wage (which is really designed for McDonalds workers etc) "budged" white collar and more skilled jobs up the scale a few thou: only it took about 3 or 4 hrs, from when it was introduced, in May 2000. (And Labour should have introduced it before that.) Know what an "entry level" journalist (with a qualification) got throughout the 1990s? 😏 £8k per annum, as did many an office worker! Now that was a rubbish wage! It was approaching £15 k by 2004, probably more in London. Now tell me the minimum wage didn't do anything for people with above minimum skills!

@CMc-v7z If that happens. Then it means that supermarkets are profiteering, and should be legally stopped from doing so.

@CobraKaiPoker-d9q 💯 True. Especially when academic research on both sides of the Atlantic says that productivity levels have risen exponentially.

With all the inflation that's gone on, that's still 💩, not a "living wage". 😏 That probably amounts to a pay cut! #FightForFifteen

@centerfield6339 That didn't happen for most of the 2000s. The prices of some basic things (eg, cooking oils) started to rise from about 2007 because of price rises on international commodity markets. Nothing to do with the UK. Same with the more recent hyperinflation. It all had international causes, nothing to do with any poxy wage "rises" (aka wage cuts!)

Actually, I reckon they should bring back the 1990s "10% bracket"!

@yourma2000 Why not? They did it in the 1970s, or were talking about it!

@yourma2000 The government could subsidise prices of essentials, as they do/did in many countries.. Anyway, supermarkets do this to farmers ALL THE TIME, when it comes to pushing down prices. They use certain basic items, such as milk, as "loss leaders" to tempt in customers, so that not even the supermarket makes a profit on the item. What are the farmers supposed to do? 😏
