  1. He destroyed the lives of loyal Americans without thinking twice, and convinced us that he was a national hero. Despite all of this, many wonder why his communist witch hunt is considered a Civil Rights violation. They can’t help but to wonder what he really did wrong. Maybe he was just trying to help us. McCarthyism has been defined as the use of false charges and other unethical tactics to limit one’s free speech. During Joseph McCarthy’s reign of power, he was able to convince a paranoid nation that there was a communist conspiracy out to overthrow our government. He told us that innocent, law abiding citizens were guilty when there were no grounds on which to base his charges. We believed him simply because we were scared. His victims were guilty until proven innocent, when they had done nothing to harm the United States. When on the stand, they were surrounded by a room of accusing people who wanted nothing more than to lock them away. Speaking did no good. McCarthy’s entire practice was unconstitutional. It essentially deprived all people involved of their right to free speech. It was a witch hunt on a national scale, and all those who spoke against it were witches. The very last thing that Senator McCarthy was worried about was the well-being of the United States. Anyone who crossed his path was in danger, for there was virtually nothing they could do to prove themselves innocent. Many of them were, at some time, a member of the communist party, but that’s not grounds to persecute them. To make a long story short, Joseph McCarthy spent four years scaring America. He told lies, and imprisoned the innocent. Those who he questioned were deprived of their civil rights. Though it was more that he took away their rights (such as Habeous Corpus) and civil liberties and made false accusations of them. At that time and as of now, being a communist is not illegal (at least not according to McCarthy) but is looked down upon, McCarthy used this to his advantage. This is what led to his censure in the senate and his later retirement from the political life.
