"We can also acknowledge that Jesus had such a profound influence on the world" So profound that he never even enters the historical record, and christians were so few and far between that Pliny the Younger had never heard of them? I think you mean that his followers had a profound influence - for better and for worse - Jesus influenced hardly anyone, if he existed at all.

  7. I think it was a common date for many dying-rising mystery religion saviour gods - something to do with the winter solstice, no doubt. The pagans were already celebrating then, why not just tell them to change their focus, rather than get them to change their diaries.
