I agree with you that it is best to start from where your are now and make the best of it. I had a TBI in a traffic accident and had severe short term memory problems for about two years afterwards. I also lost the 'index page' to a lot of earlier memories and it was devastating at first. I had to write down a lot of things to remember them and I had problems remembering what I was in the middle of saying. I wasn't able to work for about a year and then gradually got back to something like normal. I no longer had the eidetic memory I once had but my memory slowly got better and better. I had to let go of who I had been and start making the most of my recovery and embrace who I had become. So I just plowed ahead and adapted to the new me. Five years later I was fully recovered except I couldn't handle the same levels of stress and work I once had and my eidetic memory never fully returned. I adapted to my new normal.
