Diana and Charles met on the social scene and dated. yes Charles was under pressure to marry, and once he had been datig her for a while, because the press was so crazy about her, there was pressure. If he had waited much longer, odds were that he'd be a lot older than his bride....

George V made it clear during the War that it was OK for his chldren to marry into the British upper class and 2 of his sons married Scottish girls. His daughter Mary married an English peer and in short British royals had been marrying British upper class girls for 60 odd years before Diana came along. Charles and DIana were on honeymoon for 6 weeks or more. they could not be making love or talkng all the time... and Charles thought that DI woul like to discuss books iwht him. She didnt.

At the time poorer people could not afford divorces and they were disapproving about Mrs S being married twice. the upper classes minded more about her being an American. As for Marg, the queen did arrange a compromise where she could have married PT but had to come out of the succession but Marg did not take up the option

  33.  @staciasmith5162  If y ou meant Mountbatten I think he wanted Charles to marry into his family, and since Camilla had a sexual past, she was considered not quite suitable in the early 70s. Besides, she was in love with Andrew PB and wanted to marry him.

  37.  @annewalden3795  I dotn think that Diana was the first to cheat, I think they were both unhappy and it was obvious that they weren't getting along...but I dont think it mattered. The marriage was not working, they were miserable and I think that Charles turned for Sympathy to Camilla and returned to their affair and Diana turned for sympathy to other men, and it went on from there. I would guess that Diana was flirting iwht Barry Man and turning to him for affection.. but not sleeping with him.... and Charles was getting more fed up but he had Camilla whom he could turn to when he needed a friendly ear

  48.  @Alonepistachio  Abdication is not an option in the British Royal family. Charles's love was married, so he tried to find another wife, and marry as was his duty. He made a marriage to a girl he didn't know all that well and it did not work out.

  49.  @pamackroyd1825  perhaps among ordinary people, but Diana's circle were rich and did not need to marry to have a home of her own or whatever. her sisters were older than her when they married, and as far as I know, her flatmates were all single at the time of her wedding, and got married a few years later, as she was seen at various weddings. Nowadays, most women marry even later, whether upper class or not, and are more likely to be 30 years old than 20. Diana left school at 16 and after a year or 2, her parents bought a home for her in London, and she got little jobs and dated.

  50.  @pamackroyd1825  what are you on about? Presentation to the queen was stopped in the 1950s. some Girls did have a season, still but there was no presentation to the queen. Diana's friends were all older than her, when they got married. Her sisters did not marry at barely 20. Diana was certainly not older than most upper class girls when she married, that was the problem. to get a virgin, Charles had to go looking for a very young girl of 18 or 19, and that meant there was a big age gap between him and his fiancee. Camilla was married in 1973, when she was around 25. Charles preferred girls around his own age, and when he was in his 20s, there were lots of them in society, whom he dated.
