No he wasnt. He was very poor as a boy, worked hard and rose to a comfortable position in middle class society

He was poor. His father had some clerical job but they were far from rich and his father was a bad money manager and got them into debt. He had to go to work as a child, to earn money and his father was in a debtors prison. he felt the shame of slipping from respectable middle class status earning a modest living.. to working in a factory like a working class child... and that scar stayed with him all his life. However he managed to get some education and worked hard, and made good money with his writing.. but it was due to his own very hard work....
