Compared with the last one that paid for three different submarine programmes without delivering any of them?

@markhowells13 Australia is neither capable of being independent nor is it in Australia’s best interest to be completely independent. Making independent decisions yes, but it’s much better for everyone to build coalitions than to try and do everything solo. The deterrent effect is a million times more useful than being able to prove you can defend yourself solo. The US is the single biggest foreign investor in Australia, that’s an investment worth a lot to protect.

It’s certainly vulnerable and less effective than you would think. But it hasn’t been a complete non-player. It has still had an effect. And keep in mind Ukraine doesn’t have a navy, so short of playing target, customs agent, or lobbing missiles from range there’s nothing for the Russian navy to do. Any adversary Australia had would require a navy to be a threat, thus would present targets to be engaged. The main point of a defense force however is to not be required, if it’s enough of a pain no one but the stupid will even try it on. Also, a huge part of this spend is missiles and naval drones….

There’s many navy ships manufactured in Australia. Some more complex systems are utterly unaffordable for Australia to build itself though. Need to choose carefully which systems are best built where.

You don’t build a force like this to go to war, you build it to deter a war, so that one day you have great grandkids. Actually going to war is a thousand times this cost just to slowly lose. That doesn’t mean spending shouldn’t be wasteful, it needs to happen on the things that are most likely to give an attacker pause and to enable assistance to arrive.

@戴维·万斯 17.4% of Australian ARE Asian. Australia is a country of immigrants, there are people who are racist like any country, but unless there’s a lot of self hate going on, hating people due to their ethnicity is not normal in Australia. Most Australians are foreign born or have at least one foreign born parent. Calling Australians white racists is itself extremely racist.

The total indigenous budget over the next 40 years won’t buy a single sub. Stop rotting your brain on fake news.

@哈哈哈-d8b you realize China artificially keeps its own currency down and in doing so is the largest foreign holder of USD and would be the biggest victim of a USD collapse right? A lower currency boosts local manufacturing. The world’s connected, if the US Collapses it’s bad for China, if China collapses it’s bad for many other countries. There’s no win/lose here, it’s win/win or lose/lose.

Seems to be a lot of ships excluded from this count. Must only be large surface, combat ships. Still, the country is not that populated, biggest issue is crewing them. Australia is hardly fielding an expeditionary force, the most foreign deployment is sending a ship or two to assist with anti piracy or freedom of navigation.

@daszieher one of the problems is the cheaper systems are shorter range, so no manned ship is going to choose to let a threat get close enough to pick the cheaper defensive option. Need unmanned escort platforms to engage threats further out, leaving the crewed ships the option to deploy the expensive options if that fails.
