@therealajnelson the reason GPS was made available for civilian use is because a failure of the previous system led to an aircraft (KAL 007) being shot down. GPS may have flaws too but I don’t think we can pretend the previous system was practical. It worked *somewhat*., most of the time.

This isn’t true. In the US commercial aircraft being involved in fatalities is extremely rare. The last time there was this much loss of life or as many commercial aircraft involved in the US in such a period it was September, 2001. Non commercial aircraft crashing is much more common yes, but there’s no recency bias here. And while more than one aircraft has been downed by Russia. Anti aircraft missiles, the last one was in 2014. And it’s not exactly hype when it happens, it’s a big deal. All commercial aircraft incidents have always been extensively reported. There’s nothing different about the reporting this time. If anything there’s been a drop off in reporting of non commercial incidents.

They were? Commercial incidents are extremely rare, the last time there was this many commercial aircraft involved in aviation incidents in the US was September, 2001. And I’d hardly say this has a tiny fraction of that reporting. The last time there was a single loss of life as high in the US was 2009! So yes, the media is always concerned, this is just unusual.

@kingcosworth2643 lol. Drama queen much. Nothing changed for me during Covid. If you think a couple of weeks in a hotel upon returning from overseas was ‘camps’ your life must be outrageously tough. Anyone who wanted to leave still could. Better than the million dead in the US alone.

@tomkleiner8628 back in the day being in Joyce’s final year?

BS. The last time this many commercial aircraft had fatalities in the US was September 2001. Statistically this year has been substantially above average. If anything the incidents this year have been underreported compared with normal. Commercial aircraft crashes are always a big deal because they’re usually very rare. It’s been 16 years since even a single incident as big in the US.
