  1. The level of chlorine is extremely low, you’ll swallow more accidentally going for a swim than you will drink in many many years. Toxicity is determined by dose, not the mere presence of anything. You’re more likely to get something dangerous in it by reducing the amount of chlorine and letting it sit.

  2. Depends entirely on the state. In some states it’s illegal for a supermarket to even share an entrance with a bottle shop, in others they can sell it in the supermarket.

It was planned well once (fiber to the home to almost everyone) then just as all then planning was finished and money spent on it, we changed governments to one that re-planned it ‘to save money’. Dear reader, they spent more money re-planning it than the original total cost, in order to make it worse to benefit Rupert Murdoch who owned shares in the cable TV business which now has to compete with Netflix etc. Even the shitty option was an around a 10x increase in speed for most people though. And the lucky ones (on HFC) got a 50x, and the really lucky ones connected directly to fiber or eventually those on HFC got a 500x increase in speed. Rural areas were always shitty to serve, but they were impacted the most by the change of government. At least the ones that weren’t super remote who went from no internet to satellite internet under either plan. I think people forget how bad most places were before the NBN. Outside a few people on cable, internet sucked massively for 99.5% of the country, even in many very inner parts of big cities. And those on cable had extremely expensive and limited usage plans. My upload before the NBN was 0.15mbps, and that was 4km from central Brisbane it’s now 50mbps, and I could if I wanted to pay a fortune get 10000mbps upload. Even these most remote satellite users can now at *least*get burst up,pads of 10mbps, or 5mbps. So the worst possible NBN upload in the regions today is more than 30x what I got in the inner city before it.

  5. It’s been the master bedroom for decades but I expect ‘primary’ is likely to start being more popular with the youngest generations. The word ‘master’ has been slowly getting replaced in many contexts.

  7. Because of upper atmosphere wind currents the ozone layer is actually more depleted at a similar latitude over Australia compared to South America or Africa. The depletion happens over Antarctic, but wind direction makes that depleted air more concentrated above Australia. Hole is a bit of a misnomer, it’s more depleted than further north. The rotation does smear it out a bit, but it’s more like a flat tyre than a perfect donut shape. You can have a look at it in satellite images. It’s not static and does change but it’s not evenly distributed. And yes, to some degree other southern countries are impacted as well. Australia has a lot of us with terrible Irish skin and plenty of good weather to get out in the sun, so the impact is magnified even further.

  9. Has nothing to do with water restrictions, it’s purely cultural. A bidet uses so little water, and until the 90’s it was so plentiful in even Brisbane that it wasn’t even metered.

  10. Having bought homes in both Brisbane and Hobart I’ve never seen houses marketed as anything other than sqm, the filters on the real estate sites are sqm too. Seems to only be occasionally translated to squares for the boomers.

  12. Tipping has been a thing at restaurants with table service in Australia for many many decades. Even in things like Taxi’s there was at least rounding up. But it’s generally been for oh wow service was really good and then tipping was never expected, just appreciated.

  13. Depends on the state. Say in QLD they’re simply not allowed to be in a store with the same entrance at all. Rules vary quite a bit state to state. In some you don’t have to be 18 to serve it, others you do etc.

  14. Note sure what region or decade you are in but I have bought multiple houses in multiple states in Australia and have never even seen squares listed. They’re sold in sqm.

  15. Depends on the state. You can find 14 year olds serving alcohol in Tassie. The rule is just they have to be supervised by someone over 18. State liquor laws vary from pretty strict in QLD to all sorts. Some states do have alcohol in supermarkets but you need to use a different checkout, etc. Some states people under 18 can serve alcohol as long as it’s a place where someone under 18 is allowed (eg a pub serving meals) but not a nightclub etc.

These ones are extremely well maintained because they’re in South Bank which is run by a government owned corporation that’s not for profit and so ploughs the commercial rents they get from the businesses in the 42 hectare precinct into maintenance, development etc. They’re flush with cash and it doesn’t cost taxpayers a cent (if you ignore forgone revenue). There’s a heap of maintenance personnel on staff permanently blowing leaves off paths, maintaining equipment and gardens etc. The other gardens shown get good maintenance too, but not at the insane level of staffing as the limited commercial activity in the others doesn’t fund them directly.

  17. Since 2004 politicians have had the same super funds/retirement benefits as any other person. Obviously excluding any who entered parliament before 2004 and thus voted for the change they themselves would never be subjected to. I wish we paid them more, but subtracted from it $1 for every $ they earned after leaving. Then maybe they’d make decisions for the people instead of for whatever job they have lined up after.

  18. They’re not at NT levels but there will always be one if you leave the screen door open when cooking. Uyen’s sisters house looked like there was open food around the house (fruit, rice etc) so no wonder they have more Cockroaches and flies….

  19. Melbourne has good food (especially good ‘cheap’ food which some places like Hobart don’t have) and cultural attractions but damn if it isn’t the ugliest capital city in the country by a significant margin. And the weather, no thanks. Too hot and too cold, sometimes on the same day!
