@TiredoldFox the US is the second biggest exporter in the world, tariffs lead to retaliatory tariffs, and only China exports more to the US than they import. So tariffs on every country will kill the US economy which thrives off the fact that most countries don’t put tariffs on US goods. If the US puts tariffs on every nation not only will people in the US get enormous price rises, but tens of millions of US jobs will also leave to avoid the tariffs other countries put on it in return.

Even targeted tariffs on advanced semiconductors will increase the price for US customers. You can absolutely argue that domestic production is strategically important enough to justify that, but in all cases, even the best case scenario of tariffs increases prices.
