The clip of the bombers at the 5.45 point is taken from the movie, "The Battle of Britain". It actually shows German He 111 bombers breaking formation. Filmed above Spain with the Spanish Air Force.

Agreed, top hole, wizard prang, tally ho! The clip is actually taken from the movie "The Battle of Britain". German He 111s, as portrayed by the Spanish Air Force.

@jh6025 Thanks!

La Rochelle. Or maybe St. Nazaire. The U-boat pens remain standing to this day.

True, but the actor portrays von Doenitz. A very good resemblance. Doenitz lost a son on a U-boat.

Please tell - what happened? I'm a Family Guy fan myself.

@Frankie2012channel Agreed. Very necessary.

British Intelligence kept a close eye on the U-boat pens. The objective was to catch U-boats on the surface as they entered or left harbour. Attacking U-boat pens was very dangerous because of concentrated German flak. You might recall the earlier scene where the U-boat is attacked by an aircraft as it attempts to pass Gibraltar. Unknown to the Germans, the British were reading the Enigma messages and often had a good idea of where the U-boats might be, whether entering the Mediterranean or returning to port. Regular bombs couldn't penetrate reinforced concrete until the advent of Tall Boy and Grand Slam, hence the need to catch U-boats on the surface. There was one specific U-boat megabase which the RAF regularly photographed as it was being built. The British watched it getting bigger and bigger and bigger. When the British judged the pen was completed and ready for use, the RAF bombed the fook out of it with Grand Slams. The base was abandoned and never used.

@sebastianherrmann7487 This is fictitious attack which resembles actual events. In other news: The story of "Saving Private Ryan" is fiction as well. If you want a good story, watch a movie. If you want the truth, read a dozen history books.

@sebastianherrmann7487 the RAF frequently attacked La Rochelle and St. Nazaire. I don't know what part of this you disagree with. The Enigma code breakers worked on discovering the times at which U-boats would enter and leave harbour.

@sebastianherrmann7487 Thanks, and the same to you. The clip of the bombers breaking formation is actually taken from the movie, "The Battle of Britain". The clip depicts He 111 bombers, although they're actually Spanish-built aircraft borrowed for the movie from the Spanish Air Force.

Raids of this kind were frequent events, but the flak thrown up made them difficult and costly targets. British Intelligence looked for ways to catch U-boats on the surface, as they were entering or leaving. The pens were indeed bomb-prof, until the RAF started dropping Tall Boys and Grand Slams.
