Most of the British Empire was built, not by British governments, but by merchants and traders doing deals with local princes and potentates. It wasn't built by military power, but by free enterprise. Nobody did "empire" bigger or better than the British. And when the era of empires was finished, nobody dismantled faster than the British. Maybe too quickly.

Is the Anglosphere a good thing? Compare Australia, New Zealand and Canada with the Spanish-speaking world. Who did liberty and prosperity better? Thank God the Ottomans or the Chinese didn't get to those territories first.

ADAM SMITH > karl marx.

"Take up the white man's burden". The so-called "historian" David Olusoga would regard that as waycist and patronising.

@Horizon344 yes, and the African technological revolution which gave us the silicone chip, steam trains and the pointed stick.

@nickbrown6457 Well yeah duh, and Anne Boleyn was black. Oh sorry, that was Channel 5.

@nickbrown6457 Telling truths like that is becoming a hate crime.

@TimLondonGuitarist The British "military" ended where the Royal Navy's docked its vessels.

@alanbstard4 A funny thing just happened. I tried to Reply to you, but the YT autobots sent me a message in red and refused to allow me. Possibly this was because the Reply included a D-word, the same word which Rhett Butler used in his final scene of "Gone With the Wind". So I tried again, replaced the D-word with "very" and you can read it yourself. I've previously run into the same problem with the B-word which means a female dog. On a video about dogs. Strange how some words are considered offensive.

@spencerburke Yeah, Ireland would've been a better place today if the Ottoman slave traders had settled in Ireland and colonised it. As happened with Lundy Island in the Bristol Channel. This could've happened if the British/English didn't get there first. And that's exactly what's happening today, thanks to Sinn Fein.

@spencerburke You're not Muslim, for which the Catholic church should thank the Anglicans. Old saying: The Irish remember everything and learn nothing. Hundreds of years have passed and you can't give it up.

No need for a single state. Independent states co-operating is much better. As with Europe.

The Anglosphere was a great thing in the days of Churchill, who wanted a "union of the English-speaking peoples". Something might've been achieved in Maggie's time, with the special relationship between herself and President Reagan. But these days all we've got is Biden and Boris. So sad.

@TimLondonGuitarist Free enterprise > government f*ckwittery.

@jamesmason8436 Slavery existed on every inhabited continent for millennia before Harold fell at Hastings. The British came late to the party but were among the first to leave. No country in the history of the world has done more to destroy slavery. But that's OK, there are still f*ckwits who'll blame the British for slavery anyway.
1
@alanbstard4 Very true. Also, do you ever see Piers Fletcher-Dervish these days?
1
@spencerburke Plenty of English sent into slavery by King James after the failed Monmouth Rebellion.
1
@spencerburke Maybe you are indeed Muslim. Give me reparations for the Moorish/Ottoman slave trade, raiding British coastal villages and seizing people over hundreds of years.
