  1. 30 years ago, South Africa generated more electricity than the entire rest of the continent combined. Now they have insufficient power to keep the lights on all day. 30 years ago, I considered migrating there. I'm pleased I didn't.

  2.  @marekohampton8477  They used to have something called the "financial rand", a special exchange rate for migrants. For the value of my ordinary house, I could buy three or four bungalows with swimming pools. I was tempted.
