  1. The university at my town is about 70% Indian and Nigerian. The universities are run like businesses. They make more money from overseas students than from UK students. Scarcely any of those students return to their countries. Their student status is used for acquiring the right to remain, and they invite their extended families to join them. No names or pack-drill, but I'm situated within this mess and I confirm that's how it works.

  2. I used to be a Tory activist. I attended the Conservative Party Conference (1989?) when the education secretary Ken Baker announced that many tech colleges would be upgraded to university status. The intention was to create more technical and vocational graduates in engineering and science. Instead, most of those new universities offer useless soft art courses. Many of the students are from overseas, seeking only a means of remaining in the UK.
