  2. The word "fascist" refers to a bundle of sticks, a symbol of might in imperial Rome. A single stick is weak, but many sticks bound together are unbreakable. A fascine was a bundle of sticks used by tanks when fording trenches in both world wars. The word is related to "faggot", a tight conglomeration of different items bound together. Hence the slang "fag", meaning tobacco fragments bound with paper.
