FUN FACT: The bass drummer in many military bands will traditionally wear a leopardskin tunic or similar. That's because, centuries ago, the position of bass drummer would be awarded to any bl acque soldier who was available. Bla cque people did indeed exist in Europe hundreds of years ago: Freed slaves from captured Turkish vessels, that sort of thing. But their number was disappearingly tiny.

You're FIRST. Only 'cos Google AI assumes you're an African Tudor king of England. Otherwise they'd ignore you.

@aleale6277 It's amazing how many people are leaving unkind replies, just because it's something they'd never previously heard of. Georgian regiments often included deserters and refugees from other countries. The Georgian Royal Navy accepted Frenchmen, Portuguese and black slaves who'd fled their Moorish masters. If, IF IF there was a single African bloke who'd sought freedom by accepting the King's shilling, he'd be made the base drummer. It was assumed an African would be good at beating drums. Fewer language difficulties because it was simpler than blowing a trumpet. The hostility expressed in some replies is unwarranted.

@Occident. No, it's true. That's why the bass drummer often gets the leopardskin tabard.

@--6394 Obviously a bl ick bloke would only get the job if there was a bl ick bloke handy. They were associated with beating drums.

@kingrubbatiti1285 Unlike me, you've never been a military drum major / bass drummer. No names or pack drill, but I've been there, done that. It's not untrue just because you never knew about this. Georgian regiments with hundreds of soldiers often had Huguenots, Hessians and Dutchmen. If, IF there was one bl ick bloke, liberated from a slave ship, he'd be made the bass drummer.
