In the past, an officer in the RN / Marines would use some initiative, research international law and create patrols with landing ships to scoop up migrants and return them to France. Think of David Stirling, creating the SAS. These days any officer who offered a sensible plan would be sacked.

@clivemortimore8203 These people are NOT refugees. They are economic migrants, who have already passed through several safe havens before reaching the Channel. It is legitimate to rescue illegal migrants and return them to their point of embarkation.

@williamtell6750 Genuine refugees in fear for their lives will get their women and old folk out of danger, before rescuing themselves. This defines the dinghy divers as economic migrants, not refugees. If they lack the correct visas, ship them back to their point of embarkation. Same as would happen to me if I landed in Australia without the correct paperwork.

@clivemortimore8203 I approve rescuing persons in distress at sea. Those persons should be returned to their point of embarkation. If the economic migrants feel unsafe in France, a charity should hire a lawyer and sue the EU.

@williamtell6750 Agreed. Also, it is both legitimate and praiseworthy for HM armed forces to rescue migrants in unsafe vessels in international water. It's a life-saving operation. After rescue, persons who lack documents to legally enter the UK should be returned to their point of embarkation. I see no moral or legal problems with this.

@williamtell6750 I agree with you, Willy. I wholly support the British services rescuing illegal migrants. Immediately afterwards, ship them back to France. I would also approve the Foreign Office establishing an office in Calais, where would-be migrants might make an asylum application BEFORE setting off. Any persons crossing the Channel WITHOUT paperwork must be returned to France. Funny how you and I can maintain good humour and objectivity, whereas the bleeding-heart lefties are being abusive.

@Tourist1967 Your comment is needlessly offensive and does you no credit. Persons in unsafe vessels in international waters may be legitimately rescued, and returned to their point of embarkation. Several different types of vessel might be used, including "landing craft", "landing ship" and "assault craft". Some might be rigid, others semirigid.
